The base engine is a 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder with 16 valves. It pushes out 152 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. For a more powerful experience, you can upgrade to the available. 4.0-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 engine. Peak output is rated at 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque, for some impressive acceleration and all-around capability.

With the 4-cylinder engine, a 5-speed manual transmission is standard, while a 5-speed automatic is available. The 5-speed automatic transmission is the only option with the V-6 engine. While two-wheel drive is standard, four-wheel drive is available. Models with four-wheel drive also feature a two-speed transfer case drivers control by flipping a switch. Hill start assist and hill descent control are also included along with four-wheel drive. Pro-4X models are also outfitted with an electronic locking rear differential for even better trail capabilities.

Whenever you climb into the driver's seat, four-wheel antilock disc brakes which are included on each model help you keep everything under control. Electronic brake force distribution provides additional assistance as needed. An independent double-wishbone front suspension teams up with engine-speed-sensitive power steering. Among them are front fog lights, a roof rack with crossbars, automatic headlights, skid plates and heated side mirrors.

Not only does the Frontier work hard, it's designed to keep you safe at all times. Advanced airbags provide coverage for both rows of seating. Other designs guard against injury, such as hood buckling creases, side impact beams, an energy-absorbing steering column and crumple zones. Among the standard proactive technologies is vehicle dynamic control, active brake limited slip and tire pressure monitoring.

Even the interior is set up to facilitate you getting things done. While the controls and gauges are simple to read and use, comfort is still addressed through several designs. With the Crew Cab, there's seating for up to five people. Going with the King Cab adds even more space, plus rear doors that open wider so getting into and out of the vehicle is easier. The rear bottom seat cushions can flip up, allowing you to load taller items into the cabin. There's an optional storage bin that goes under the rear seats, plus it can be removed quickly. Two 12-volt power outlets are standard on all models, allowing you to power or charge up devices while on the go.
