The Nissan Frontier for the United States market is currently in its second generation. Introduced as a 2005 model, it underwent extensive updates in 2009. For 2016, the Nissan Frontier received several new exterior colors. Also, a standard sunroof has also been added to SV models.

Trim Levels & Body Styles of the 2016 Nissan Frontier

The 2016 Nissan Frontier comes in extended cab (King Cab) and crew cab body styles. King cab models come with a 6.1-foot cargo bed while buyers of the crew cab get a choice of a 5-foot or 6.1-foot one. Combined with the five trim levels (S, SV, SL, Desert Runner and PRO-4X) and you get nearly 30 combos to choose from.

Powertrain

King Cab models come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as their standard powerplant. Horsepower and torque are 152 and 171 respectively. Standard in Crew Cab models and available on King Cabs is a 4.0-liter V-6. Output from this engine is 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque.

Transmission choices include a five-speed manual, a five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. When properly equipped, the Frontier can tow between 3,500-6,500 lbs.

"With a choice of two engines combined with either of the 4x2 or 4x4 platforms, the Nissan Frontier can be most things to most people," notes Autotrader. "Larger than the old compact pickups of the 1980s and 1990s, the Frontier platform more closely resembles Nissan's full-size Titan. The Frontier's base 4-cylinder is lighter on its feet, but you can't disguise the sturdy, fully boxed ladder frame or the hefty curb weight. Opt for the V6 with 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, and you'll have a truck that is certainly recreational in a straight line while staying reasonably composed when the road throws you a curve."

Safety Features

The Frontier S is the workhorse of the lineup. Features of note include cloth seats, 15-in. steel wheels and a chrome rear bumper. Air-conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and cruise control come in models with automatic transmission. In safety, four-wheel disc brakes with standard anti-lock brakes and electronic traction and stability control systems are found on the standard equipment list. Same with side-impact supplemental bags for front-seat passengers and roof-mounted curtain airbags.

At the other end of the spectrum is the SL. The most luxurious model of the Frontier line, standard features include a sunroof, side steps and leather seats to name just a few.

Off-Road Capability of the 2016 Nissan Frontier

The Frontier Pro-4X is aimed at the serious off-roader. Thus it comes equipped with off-road tires, specially tuned shocks, a locking rear differential and underbody skid plates. Four-wheel drive also is standard.
