It's been the leader in the midsize sedan field for a long time. Now, with an updated exterior and other new features, the 2016 Nissan Altima is ready to remind its competitors why it's been one of the top-selling cars since its introduction.

Powertrain

The grille has been revamped into a more-aggressive V-shape. The headlights and taillights are bolder, and the fenders have been reshaped. But under the hood, Nissan's tried-and-true 2.5-liter, 182-horsepower engine gets you where you need to go with 27 mpg around town and an impressive 39 mpg on the highway. If more horses are what you're after, put your foot on the pedal and feel the power of the optional 3.5-liter 270-horsepower V-6, which turns in 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway.*

How comfortable the 2016 Nissan Altima is!

The cabin gives you simplicity combined with comfort. Nissan engineers added acoustic glass and more sound-deadening material to keep outside noise where they belong-outside. As The Car Connection noted, the 2016 Altima does a much better job than its rivals of keeping noise out. But it's not just about noise. With five trim levels, you can select any number of options or stick with the well-equipped base model which comes with power accessories, keyless entry, air conditioning, a fully-adjustable driver's seat, push-button ignition and Bluetooth connectivity.

Move through the other trim levels and you can select items like power seats, a sport-tuned suspension, automatic headlights, and a rear-view camera. Dual-zone climate control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, remote engine start and satellite radio are options too.

Engine Specifications of the 2016 Nissan Altima

Of course, the cream of the crop is the SL version with either the 2.5-liter engine or the V-6. The 2.5 SL's cabin has leather-appointed seats, a nine-speaker premium Bose sound system including woofers, heated front seats that are power-adjustable, and equipment controlled by Nissan's Intelligent Key. Point it at the car and unlock the doors, start it remotely, unlock the trunk, or even heat or cool down the car from a distance of 100 feet away. It's the ultimate in convenience on days where the weather is nasty.

The 3.5 SL gives you V-6 power and comfort at the same time. A power moonroof lets you enjoy days of good weather, while NissanConnect with navigation and mobile apps runs on your 7-inch monitor to assist you. The front and rear sonar system keeps you safe from stationary obstacles, while the Altima's blind spot warning lets you know if someone's car is a problem on the roadway. But regardless of the trim level you select, one thing remains the same: Nissan quality. With the new design features, the 2016 Nissan Altima demonstrates again why it's been a class leader for years.
